Interactive Workshop: Discomfort and Social Justice

Wednesday 28 May at 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

A workshop with Professor Miriam Ticktin to explore experiences of discomfort while conducting research and the ethical questions these raise.

This workshop will bring together colleagues from different disciplines to explore experiences of discomfort while conducting research. We will share individual examples of such moments and draw on work about innocence by Miriam Ticktin, MMB’s Bristol Benjamin Meaker Distinguished Visiting Professor, to explore questions such as: what does research discomfort reveal about ethical dilemmas and power structures? Who benefits when discomfort is dismissed or avoided in research? How does discomfort challenge scholarly neutrality, and what are the consequences for scholars who push these boundaries? In this way we hope to uncover what moments of discomfort reveal about the politics, ethics and integrity of our work.

Please note, the discussion will be confidential. All participants will share three minute ‘flash’ presentations of a discomforting moment.

Tea, coffee and cake will be provided.

Places are limited so if you would like to join the workshop please sign up via the Eventbrite page.
