‘Discrimination and Delegation’ by Lamis Elmy Abdelaaty: book launch

Tuesday 29 June 2021 at 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Please join us for a book launch and debate of Discrimination and Delegation: Explaining State Responses to Refugees (OUP, 2021) by Lamis Elmy Abdelaaty. This timely new book includes an in-depth analysis of asylum policies in three developing countries – Egypt, Turkey and Kenya – and sheds light on asylum policymaking in the global South, where the majority of the world’s refugees live.

Lamis will talk about her book with Zeynep Sahin Mencütek and then the floor will be open for questions and comments by all participants. The event will be chaired by Filippo Dionigi, Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Bristol.

Lamis Abdelaaty is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, and Senior Research Associate at the Campbell Public Affairs Institute. Her interests include international relations, human rights and humanitarianism, and asylum and migration.

Zeynep Sahin Mencutek is the Senior Researcher at the Bonn International Center for Conversion, leading to the project on return and reintegration. She is also research affiliate with the Canadian Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration at Ryerson University to conduct a joint research on Governance of Migration.

“In this brilliant book, Lamis Abdelaaty effectively combines qualitative and quantitative methods to explain why some states are more generous to refugees than others. The answers she provides — that policymakers will be more open to those fleeing a hostile state and who share the ethnic identity of the policymakers — matter profoundly for both scholarship and practice.” – Alexander Betts, Professor of Forced Migration and International Affairs, University of Oxford.
