Magical Migrations: The Moths of Royal Fort Gardens

Thursday 29 May at 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm

Please join us to learn about the moths of Royal Fort Gardens in the company of lepidopterist David Brown. The author of numerous books on lepidoptera, as well county recorder for Warwickshire, David will be hosting a night of moth-trapping in the gardens. This will involve trapping (and releasing) moths at different locations, as well as a ‘field lecture’ on the natural histories of different moths species. In line with the theme of the night, ‘magical migrations’, David will also pay special attention to the fascinating topic of moth migration.

We will also be joined by the poet Holly Corfield-Carr, who will be reading some moth poems (and asking us to imagine the garden from a moth’s perspective…)

Teas, coffee and cake will be provided during the evening and there will be ample opportunities to ask David questions about the moth species we encounter in the garden.

Places are limited so if you would like to attend the evening, please sign up here.

Further details:

Please meet at 8.30pm at the main entrance to Royal Fort Gardens (by the Lodge at the entrance on Tyndall Avenue). The poetry reading will take place in the early part of the evening as the moths arrive.

Since it will be dark on the hill, please bring a torch or a headlamp as well as suitable clothing and footwear.

The event will be weather dependent, as we will require good weather for the moth trapping. In case of cancellation, we will be in touch before the start of the event.

Access:

The moth traps will all be placed along the gravel paths around the garden, which can be accessed by wheelchair.

This event is part of the Seasons and Cycles series at the (de)Bordering plot organised by Migration Mobilities Bristol and the Brigstow Institute, with further sponsorship from the Centre for Environmental Humanities. It has been brought together by Michael Malay, Senior Lecturer at UoB and author of the award-winning book Late Light: The Secret Wonders of a Disappearing World (2024), which features a chapter on moths.
