The Ethics and Geopolitics of Representation in Post-Conflict Peru

Wednesday 29 November 2023 at 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

A seminar with Sylvanna Falcón, UC Santa Cruz.

Representation can be quite challenging to navigate when societies are divided about how to memorialize a tragedy. In the case of Perú, this tension came to the fore with the creation of human rights memorials to commemorate the lives of those affected by the internal conflict of 1980-2000. Drawing on a forthcoming book titled Human Rights Counterpublics in Perú: Contesting Tiers of Citizenship (2024, University of Illinois Press), Sylvanna’s research presentation plans to cover the ethics and geopolitics of representation using the case of Peru. Within the context of racism, xenophobia, and misogyny in broader Peruvian society, how has grief itself become politicized?

The seminar is organised by HiPLA and co-hosted by MMB. Everyone is welcome.

Sylvanna Falcón is a feminist and decolonial scholar currently working on human rights witnessing and how publicly available digital information has shifted the terrain of human rights accountability for activists, advocates, lawyers and journalists searching for truth. She is an Associate Professor in the Latin American and Latino/a Studies Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the founder/director of the Human Rights Investigations Lab at UC Santa Cruz.
