Bordering Bristol: Visuality Workshop

Wednesday 22 May at 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm

An afternoon workshop run by Victoria Hattam (MMB Leverhulme Visiting Professor) and Nariman Massoumi to explore the dynamics of visual fields through the collaborative making of visual essays. Lunch provided!

REGISTRATION HERE.

The workshop will be divided into three parts. Hattam and Massoumi will begin with a brief framing of visuality and bordering in which they will discuss their own and others work on visuality as a site of research. Specific examples will be shared for discussion.

In the second part, participants will self-organize into small groups to undertake a small creative project in which they go out for an hour to take photographs of borders and bordering at the University of Bristol and its surrounding neighbourhoods. Groups will then return to the workshop space to select, sequence and print five images to share with the whole workshop. Images can be organized aesthetically, conceptually or otherwise. There is no expected format.

Each group will then share their visual essay with all workshop participants. After discussion, we will rearrange the images in any way the group wishes.  We might end up with one giant visual field or a series of new image sequences.

Participants are required to bring their own smartphone for taking images.

Lunch, tea and coffee will be provided.

Places are limited so to take part in the workshop please register here.
