Migrating Rocks project workshop
Friday 12 July at 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
You are warmly welcomed to the next in our workshops for the Migrating Rocks project, taking place this Friday 12th July, 10:00 -13:00 in Bristol (Wills Memorial Building, University of Bristol and City Museum).
Click here if you would like to attend.
During this workshop we will continue discussions about colonial histories, co-creation of knowledge and human connections with the land through specimen-based activities and a behind-the-scenes store tour at Bristol Museum.
The workshop will be delivered by Deborah Hutchinson (Geology Curator, Bristol Museum) and Claudia Hildebrandt (Collection Manager, University of Bristol Earth Sciences Collection). We will start with a welcome and introduction to the project at the University of Bristol and a brief activity centred around a selection of rocks and stones from the UoB Earth Sciences collection. We will then wander over to the City Museum (2mins walk) for a store tour to explore examples of migrating stones, repatriation, extraction and colonial and postcolonial legacies. After that, we will return to the University of Bristol for a reflective activity which takes into account the themes and examples explored during the store tour.
Throughout the day we encourage discussions between all attendees about their own practices, researcher and interests that touch on the themes like portability of place, curatorial best practice, ethical co-creation of knowledge, ethics of research and collecting etc.
This is the second of three workshops. The final workshop in the autumn 2024 will bring attendees together one final time to review the experience of the workshops and explore potential opportunities for further research and collaboration.
