MMB Leverhulme Public Lecture with Professor Victoria Hattam: ‘Seeing Gold – Imagination and Evidence’

Wednesday 12 June at 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm

A public lecture by our Leverhulme Visiting Professor Victoria Hattam from The New School for Research, New York. Followed by a drinks reception.

Imagination, Hattam contends, is a central aspect of both academic research and political life. Drawing on three rather different research sites she explores competing state representations of the COVID-19 virus, the gold rush in Victoria, Australia, in the mid 19th century and the International Boundary Commission Banco maps of the US-Mexico border from 1912. Across all three sites, Hattam considers the ways in which imagination and evidence travel together. Attending to imagination raises important questions about both social research and the boundaries of the political.

Chair: Professor Phil Taylor, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise.

Discussant: Professor Bridget Anderson, Professor of Migration, Mobilities and Citizenship and Director of Migration Mobilities Bristol.
