MMB Tour of Bristol Digital Futures Institute
Wednesday 29 November 2023 at 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
Join us for a tour of Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI), a unique part of the university where interdisciplinary teams work together with the aim of shaping digital futures that work for all. Many MMB members will be very conscious of the challenges of achieving this aim, and that all too often digital technologies work to exclude and stigmatize marginalised people, including migrants and racialised citizens. But we do not understand the technologies themselves, meaning that we may fail to seize their potential. Join us to learn more in an MMB visit to BDFI’s new home at the heart of the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus. You will see amazing experimental sociotechnical research facilities and learn about what they mean for co-creation, methodologies and theory.

More on BDFI:
BDFI’s mission is to transform the way we create new digital technology for inclusive, prosperous and sustainable societies. Founded in 2019, it is the youngest of the University of Bristol’s five research institutes. What is guiding the team is an understanding that digital technologies have changed our world, and that we need to acknowledge and engage with both the opportunities and challenges this change brings to the fore. To step up to the challenge, we need a better understanding of how technologies and people are shaping the future together, and a new way of working. Thus, the institute brings together academics from across disciplines with 28 partners from all sectors (from world-leading technology businesses to local community organisations) in its new home in the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, where we will have world-leading and unique facilities. Here, researchers will create knowledge, new ways of doing academic research, novel and experimental methodologies and theoretical engagements, as well as lead in technology co-creation and co-design.
