COVID-19 has highlighted the worst of the UK immigration system. MMB invites four experts to reenvision a better, fairer system for the future.
The fallout from the global pandemic has brought into sharp relief the UK’s reliance on low-paid – some say unskilled – migrant workers. But Prime Minister Boris Johnson is pressing ahead with his plan to introduce a points-based system in January 2021. Points will be given for skills such as speaking English or for having a PhD; extra points will go to higher earners. The aim is to regulate who can enter and remain in the UK while exploiting other countries’ human resources for the benefit of the UK economy.
But what about those chosen or loved ones that individual citizens want to bring in for the benefit of their own emotional well-being? And what about those migrants who have already made the UK their home but are no longer deemed of benefit to the economy? How many points should you get for being in love? How many points for knowing just how dirty our streets are because you’ve spent so many nights on them?
What kind of immigration system do we want for those who are not classed as the brightest or the best? Join MMB to discuss these issues at an online event led by key experts in UK and global migration systems.
